Thotlakonda Buddhist Complex is a 2,000-year-old Buddhist heritage site located on a scenic hilltop near Bheemunipatnam, around 15 km from Visakhapatnam. Overlooking the Bay of Bengal, the site features ancient stupas, viharas (monasteries), chaityas, meditation halls, and rock-cut water cisterns that reflect the rich Buddhist heritage of the region. Discovered during an aerial survey by the Indian Navy and later excavated by the Andhra Pradesh Archaeology Department, Thotlakonda is one of the most significant Buddhist archaeological sites in South India. Visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins while enjoying breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline, making it an ideal destination for history enthusiasts, photographers, and nature lovers.
