Previously under the jurisdiction of the Maharajah of Vizianagaram, the sanctuary's terrain, dominated by the local hill of Kambalakonda, mainly comprises dry evergreen forests interspersed with scrublands and meadows.
Covering a vast area of seventy square kilometers, the sanctuary is home to significant species like the Indian leopard. Managed by the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department since 1970, efforts are underway to enhance its appeal for tourism.
